Obituary
Alex Sherman Meeks Sr. was born on March 10, 1950, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Blanchie (B.W.) and Merlene Meeks. He peacefully departed this life on December 8th, 2025. He was the second of four children. Alex accepted Christ at an early age and attended First Baptist Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas, where his faith was strengthened and continued to guide his life.
Alex completed his early education at Horace Mann High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, graduating in 1968. Following graduation, he attended Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma, on a track scholarship. He later transferred to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), a Historically Black College and University, where he continued competing on the track team. Alex earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Music, reflecting his lifelong passion for both subjects.
Alex was a man of many talents. He was an accomplished painter and skilled carpenter, known for his craftsmanship and willingness to help others. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and active community helper. Alex dedicated countless hours tutoring students and adults across Tulsa Public Schools, Jenks Public Schools, and Broken Arrow Public Schools. He also supported city workers from departments including the fire department, police department, and water department. Anyone who met Alex quickly recognized his infectious passion for music, mathematics, and sports, which left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
In 1975, Alex began his professional career as a math teacher with the Lee County School District in Marianna, Arkansas. He later relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he worked for the Department of Rehabilitation Services and subsequently served as an inspector with the Housing Authority of the City of Tulsa. His final employment was with Tulsa Public Schools, where he served in the Security Department until his retirement in 2010.
Alex proudly served in the Army National Guard for over 15 years and was called to active duty during Operation Desert Storm. He received several awards for his service and was honorably discharged in 1991.
Alex leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 52 years, Margaret (Johnson) Meeks; three children, Alex Meeks Jr., Brandi Meeks, and Shane Meeks-Dixon; five grandchildren, Kylon Buffington, Christian Meeks, Alex Meeks III, Zypel Meeks, Cashon Johnson, Rixton Dixon, and Kysen Dixon; and four great-grandchildren, Aubrey Buffington, Savior Owens, Landon Buffington, and Zareen Buffington. He also leaves behind one sister, Pamela (Meeks) McLain of Maumelle, Arkansas, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, a son by love and bond, Charles Harris and dear friends.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents, B.W. and Merlene Meeks; his sister, Essie Ashford; and his brother, Wardell Meeks, all of Little Rock, Arkansas.
