Obituary

Anthony Bruce Cox, 70, of Fort Gibson, OK passed away on Sunday, November 20 at 7:30am with his family by his side.

Bruce married Sheryl Torix in 1972, together they shared 50 years making precious memories. He enjoyed being a math teacher and challenging his students. He spent hours tutoring/mentoring students and plenty of nieces and nephews. In his younger years, he was happiest while coaching his son and daughter’s ball teams, but the highlight of his life were his grandchildren. Whether you knew him as Bruce, Uncle Bruce or Poppy you know he had a very dry sense of humor, most people couldn’t tell if he was joking or being serious, he always spoke his mind, take it or leave it and he loved listening to country music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David Cox Sr and Nell Johnson Cox, his brothers David Cox Jr, Terry Cox and Michael Cox.

He is survived by his wife Sheryl Torix Cox of the home, daughter Marcie Cox, son Marc Cox, granddaughters Kourtney Cox and Madison Cox, grandson Michael Kizzia, great granddaughter Nova Cox, great grandson Kash Cox, sister Verna Young and brother Randy Cox.

The family would like to thank John Young and Randy Cox for all their help. A special thanks to Buck Torix, a life-long friend and brother-in-law, for everything. Thank you to Dr. Donald Elgin, Shelly Dortch and the staff at St. Francis Muskogee ICU for the excellent care.

Although he expressed it every day, Poppy leaves a special message for his family.

To my grandchildren, thank you for the laughter, love and happiness you brought into my life.

To my daughter, thank you for every time you needed me, your projects were special to me because I was with you.

To my son, thank you for the girls, that got me Nova and Kash. You are going to be the best Papa ever.

To my wife, I agree, you chased me until I caught you.

44- Poppy.

  1. Hi, Poppy. I’ve watched your relationship with your granddaughters from the sideline for a couple years now, and I know how much they love & adore you. You were the best poppy, and I can say that without a doubt! I hope you are resting easily, keep watching over those girls!

Sadly we never got to meet in person. I have heard stories of his ingenuity, his sense of humor, and most of all his love for his family. Marcie has regaled me with stories that had me in stitches one moment, and shaking my head in disbelief , in another. I loved hearing stories about him and his projects. I feel like I have known him for more than 15 years, tho we’ve never met. My heart goes out to the family loosing such a beloved member. ❤️

Poppy, you are terribly missed. I know you will be your family’s guardian angel for the rest of their days. It brings me peace knowing you’re dancing with Jesus.
