Obituary

On September 23, 1960 a precious baby girl was born to Willa Mae Lewis. She named her Benita Verner (Nee-Nee). The father figure in her life was Fredrick Commander. She was the oldest of 9 siblings. Benita (Nee-Nee) attended McLain HS and graduated in 1978. While in school, she participated in softball, volleyball, swimming and track. She was blessed to be the mother of six children; Richie, Tamara, Ashley, Sidrick, Latoya and Rochelle. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother to her grand kids. She loved them all dearly. Benita (Nee-Nee) loved to smile and laugh with her family and friends. She always enjoyed having a good time and celebrating life. She thought the world of her 6 children and 21 grand babies. Her baby girl Rochelle was the sparkle in her eye. She enjoyed cooking and was very good at it. Benita had a good spirit to help all who would call on her. She loved her life and the people in it. She was a caregiver to many who loved her tremendously. To several she was a shoulder to cry on, a good friend to behold, a loving mother and grandmother, a great big sister and a genuine “Real Woman”. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by, Virwice Buchanan (grandmother), Albert Buchanan, (Buck) (grandfather), Fredrick Commander (father). Left behind to reflect on her memory are children: Richie Verner, Tamara Verner, Ashley Verner, Sidrick Verner (Shondelle), Latoya Verner, Rochelle Verner, Angie and Deshana; 24 grandchildren; mother, Willa Mae Lewis-Freeman; sisters, Roslyn Commander, Teresa Commander (Larry), Francine Okewole (Yommie), Lisa Rhodes (Allen) Youlanda Howard (Richard), Greshon Jennings (Steve), Freda Buckley (Wayne), Trena Thomas (Wayne), Lillie Shelton (Gabby), Jackie Buchanan; uncles, Buck Buchanan and Willie Buchanan; special cousins, Dorothy, Vivion, Linda Carol, Ruth, Sherry, Carnell, Diane, Sherlyn and Dorma; 25 nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and friends. Benita’s services will be held 11:00am, Saturday, June 28th 2014 at Latter House Outreach Ministries located at 4663 N. Cincinnati Ave. Tulsa, OK. Viewing will be held Thursday from 1:00pm till 8:00pm and also on Friday from 9:00am till 8:00pm. The family welcomes you to leave an online condolence here on this website.
