Obituary

Edwin Willard Hayes, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on Monday, November 22, 2010. Born July 5, 1946 to Charles Hayes and Johnnie Bell Britt, he was the only son and baby brother to sister Elaine Hayes-Rush. He attended Tulsa Public Schools graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in 1964. Baptized at Vernon AME Church under Rev. Ben Hill at an early age, he remained a devoted member until ill health prevented his attendance. Edwin had a voice that was ‘smooth as silk’ and was a member of the Church Master Choir, Men’s Group and could be depended on to join in or lead the group in song. He was also known for his ‘smile’ as it would brighten up any room and bring warmth to the heart. Married at an early age to Rhonda ‘Peaches’ Mann, they had one son, Steven. Later in life he married his ‘forever love’ Leslie and to this union one son, Kim, was born. As the youngest, Kim was his father’s shadow and best friend. Edwin’s last job was as Code Enforcement Officer for the City of Tulsa. He retired in 2003. One of his greatest pleasures was participating with the BTW Alumni Class of 64. Having once served as President he was always willing and ready to join in for whatever activities were planned. Special friends from the class include his brother Maurice ‘Butch’ Harding, Brother Willie Ingram, John Stephens, Wayne Robinson and the entire class became his extended family. During his illness those who provided extraordinary care, love and companionship included Rick & Kathy Koch, James Koch, Jeff Ebbs and Willie Waugh. After some years of dealing with a bad heart, God called him home. He is survived by his loving wife Leslie, children Steven, David, Michael, Natasha & Kim, one sister Elaine Hayes-Rush, Aunt Opaline, six grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 24 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM and on Friday, November 26 from 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM at Butler-Stumpff Funeral Home located at 2103 East Third Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74104.
