She attended school at Rosewald Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High, and later Bristow High School in Bristow, Oklahoma. She later moved to Tulsa and joined Shiloh Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend H.D. Morris, Reverend Melvin Bailey and Pastor Bell.
She was the first ninth grader at Marion Anderson Jr High. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1963. After graduating, she worked for the health department and retired from Alorica Company in 2008.
She cherished her three sons and one daughter; Winston R. Barnes Jr, Wayne T. Barnes, Claude E. Barnes, and Carolyn A. Barnes by Winston R. Barnes, Sr.
