Obituary

James Leroy Martin was born May 20, 1923 and was a lifelong resident of Hartshorne, Oklahoma. Jim passed from this life October 22, 2011. He was the son of Ray and Minnie Volturo Martin who preceded him in death. Jim was elected to the Hartshorne City Council and served 12 years as a councilman. He attended Hartshorne Schools, Eastern Oklahoma A & M College and graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the International School of Correspondence, Chicago, Ill. He was shop foreman and service manager for Pettit Motor Company for 35 years. During these years he received many awards for Master Mechanic and distinguished dealership service awards. He also worked for the Oklahoma State Highway Department as a foreman and the United States Post Office. He was a certified locksmith and lathe operator. Jim was interested in oil and gas development and bought and sold leases and mineral rights. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Marie and brother John. Jim is survived by his sister, Julia of Tulsa, his son Wesley Barton, daughter Stephanie Reynolds, grandchildren, Charles, Holly, Crista and caregivers Sandy McGuire and Joan Huff. Jim’s favorite pastime in his later years was visiting and having coffee with the men at the local restaurant. He will be missed by family and friends and remembered as a honest, hard worker who lived a simple and good life. Graveside services will be at 1:00pm Tuesday at Holy Rosary Cemetery. Visitation and viewing will be at the cemetery from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
