Obituary

Joey LaDon Simpson was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma  on September 1st, 1977 to Patricia Ann Simpson. Dad would tell you the day he came home from the hospital after being born, his mother arrived home to see their front door had been kicked in and various home items had been stolen- this would be the start of a substandard childhood due to an unstable parental and home environment. He attended 13 different schools and spent time between living with relatives and the foster care system he learned to adapt to his environment. Even with all of this he found purpose and pursued his dream of becoming a barber. He started cutting his own hair as young as thirteen years old due to not being able to afford haircuts. By the time Joey reached high school he would cut people’s hair in the bathroom/gym or wherever he could for some lunch money.

He met his friend Robert Ellis (brother in law) who would then become his manager at warehouse market. Joey would then meet his sister Brenda Ellis while working there, they would go on to date and eventually marry. They would welcome their first child Tylia Mae (1997) He would also continue to work at barbershops on Apache and Master’s touch for a few years. Brenda and Joey would go on to have two more children Joya (2000) and Joey Jr. (2001). During the 2008 market crash Joey would lose his job and pick back up barbering and would continue until his final years. He would also marry Brenda Simpson in 2009, in a private ceremony with their children.

Joey would continue to barber full time out of his family home. Over the years he would cut many friends and classmates’ hair but also a lot of young boys who grew to become men. He took great pride in making people feel and look their best, but also helping to nurture his clientele of boys and young men, some like himself were raised without fathers. He was a positive male figure in their life as well as anyone who entered our home. In March of 2024 he would be diagnosed with 3 forms of cancer, he would continue to battle cancer for the remainder of the year – he would choose to come home on hospice where he passed peacefully at home on December, 14, 2024 surrounded by his wife and children. He is survived by his wife Brenda and children Tylia, Joya and Joey Jr. Simpson, his granddaughter Xion Pulse, as well as his nieces and nephews and an abundance of family and friends.
