Mrs. Lair is remembered fondly by me. I always called her ‘Mrs. Lair’ as that was considered respectful at the time. Her son George was my best friend before I left Oklahoma with other family members at age twelve.
Mrs. Lair welcomed me into her home, let me spend the night on the weekends and always made sure I wasn’t hungry. She often fed me because I was often hungry.
I was being raised by my elderly grandfather as both my parents and grandmother had passed. I was allowed to charge food to my grandpa’s account at Parker’s Corner Grocery. As a kid I chose candy for my meals, and I’m sure Mrs. Lair suspected as much. I remember her as being very caring and attentive to me.
